Student Council members shared how specialist further education is supporting them on their journey towards a successful adulthood.
We want to share our experiences and let people know what works and what we want. Its clear to see: were already achieving and thriving.
That was the powerful message from 91勛圖厙 student Jonathon as he and fellow Student Council members took to the stage at Naidex, held at Birminghams NEC on 25 March.
the National Accessibility, Inclusion and Disability Expo, is the UKs leading event for disability, accessibility and independent living.泭Representing 91勛圖厙 on a national platform, Louise, Oliver, Jonathon and AJ spoke candidly about college life: what young people want from their education, the support that helps them flourish and why Derwen was the best fit for them.
Louise described the personal difference college has made: I have so much more confidence. Shyness previously held me back. Oliver reflected on the importance of being given time and support to settle in: Settling in at college took me two to three months. I dont feel I would have had this support in mainstream.
With support from Tabetha Crinson, Learner Voice Lead, the students developed the presentation in their own words. They drew on their individual experiences to set out a roadmap for a successful pathway towards adulthood, built on skilled teaching, a broad range of vocational learning, life skills, work experience and enriching opportunities.
Presenting experience
Jonathon and AJ brought valuable presenting experience to the occasion, having previously spoken at major events including in 2025. Together, all four students delivered their message with clarity, honesty and confidence.
When the presentation ended, they fielded questions from an audience of professionals and members of the public with impressive composure. This demonstrated not only how much they have achieved, but also why young peoples voices must remain central to decisions about their education and future.
Derwen on Tour (DOT), the colleges Performing Arts sign and dance group, also performed at the event, bringing energy, creativity and an inclusive celebration of communication to the Naidex stage.
Their appearance at Naidex was a proud moment for 91勛圖厙 and a powerful example of learner voice in action. By sharing what works for them, the students helped others understand how personalised support, meaningful opportunities and high aspirations can enable young people to grow in confidence and thrive.
